Looking Forward 2013: Movies, Pt. 1

It's time for the movie list!  I'll probably update it as I hear about wonderful movies to come out this year.  It's hard to catch them all!  Part 1 is all movies with set or tentatively set dates of release this year.  Part 2 will feature those movies set for 2013 without release date, which means they'll likely be 2014 (for Sundance) or really late 2013 (for award season).

January 18
Jessica Chastain and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau star as a couple whose nieces lived their for five years in the woods, abandoned but raised by someone.  That someone is not a good entity but wants custody of her children that were stolen from her.  this horror film might actually be good!

January 25
Sure, this is one of those ensembles that have every actor you know in one movie, where each separate story ends up being connected to all the other ones in their six degrees of separation game.  But this one seems like it will actually be funny, rather than romantic and gross and terrible.  Emma Stone, Kristen Bell, Hugh Jackman, Chloe Moretz, elizabeth Banks, Gerard Butler, Naomi Watts, Anna Faris, Kate Winslett, Chris Pratt, Justin Long, Jason Sudeikis, and many more star.  Elizabeth Banks, James Gunn, and Brett Ratner are three of the directors!

January 25
I'm so happy that golden aged actors are getting quality roles that are engaging, not just having roles looking back on their lives as they die.  What a tired trope!  This looks to be in the same spirit as Marigold Hotel

Read on for more.

Premieres at Sundance (Jan 17-27)
Written by comedy duo Casey Wilson and June Diane Raphael and directed by Chris Nelson, Wilson and Raphael play BFFs travel to their hometown to reclaim their dreams of winning a pageant they both lost as children.  Alicia Silverstone, John Cryer, and Paul Scheer co-star.  The film is being compared to an updated Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion.  YES!

Premieres at Sundance (Jan 17-27)
I am so excited for this comedy. which stands for "Adult Children of Divorce".  It has a brilliant cast comprised of Adam Scott, Amy Poehler, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jane Lynch, Catherine O'Hara, Richard Jenkins, Adam Pally, Ken Howard, and Jessica Alba.  Scott stars as a man who finds out he was part of a study of children and how they're affected by divorce and returns for a follow-up.  Be still, my heart!  I SAID BE STILL!

Premieres at Sundance (Jan 17-27)
Kathryn Hahn, Juno Temple, Josh Radnor, Jane Lynch, Michaela Watkins, and Annie Mumolo star in this drama about a bored housewife looking to escape her life.

Premieres at Sundance (Jan 17-27)
Keri Russell stars as a woman who is obsessed with Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice (BBC version, of course) and travels to Austenland, a Jane Austen theme park to find her romantic Victorian gentleman husband. J.J. Field, Jennifer Coolidge, Bret McKenzie, James Callis, and Jane Seymour co-star!  Austenland was picked up during Sundance by Sony for distribution.
Premieres at Sundance (Jan 17-27)
The hilarious Lake Bell wrote and directed this comedy about an underachieving vocal coach looking to be the most sought-after voiceover artist.  Fred Melamed, Demetri Martin, Michaela Watkins, Ken Marino, Rob Corddry, Nick Offerman, and Geena Davis co-star.

Premieres at Sundance (Jan 17-27)
Written and directed by Liz W. Garcia, The Lifeguard stars Kristen Bell as a reporter who quits her job in New york to return home in Connecticut.  She may or may not end up entangled in a complicated relationship with a teenager.  UH-OH!  Martin Starr, Mamie Gummer, Amy Madigan, and Ramamurthy Sendhil co-star.

Premieres at Sundance (Jan 17-27)
Allen Ginsberg (Daniel Radcliffe), William Burroughs (Ben Foster), and Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston) are the star characters in the story of their beginning friendship.  John Krokidas directs and co-writes with Austin Bunn.  It's his directorial debut, also starring Elizabeth Olsen, Michael C. Hall, Dane DeHaan, David Cross, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Kyra Sedgwick.  WOW!

Premieres at Sundance (Jan 17-27), March 8 (U.K.)
Stephen Fry, Imogen Poots, Anna Friel, Matt Lucas, Steve Coogan, and Tamsin Egerton star in the film directed by Michael Winterbottom and written by Matt Greenhalgh.  Coogan plays Paul Raymond, London porn baron, and the film takes us into his life.  There will probably be boobies, but will there be dong?

Premieres at Sundance (Jan 17-27)
Written and directed by Meul O, Jiseul tells the story of 120 people living in a cave for three months during the Korean Jeju Massacre of 1948.  Go ahead, stomp on my heart now.  DO IT!

February 8
Rose Byrne as lead (with Rafe Spall) with Anna Faris, Stephen Merchant, and Minni Driver in supporting roles?  Yes, please!  There's no reason this shouldn't be wonderful!

March 8
While I feel like everything I watch with Tina Fey revolves around her and having a kid, it's Tina Fey and Paul Rudd!  Paul Rudd has been off with me, though, the past few years.  I feel like he just plays a loser who is not at all put together in every film, just with varying degrees of loserness.  I'm hoping this movie will bring him back.

April 5
Sandy Bullock and Melissa McCarthy teaming up for the ultimate buddy cop flick, which happens to be two women who could not be more opposite.  With director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Office, Arrested Development); writer Katie Dippold (MadTV, Parks and Recreation); and supporting actors Kaitlin Olson (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Tony Hale (Arrested Development), Taran Killam (SNL), Nathan Corddry (United States of Tara), and Michael McDonald (MadTV), it'll be hard to not laugh the entire time.

April 19
The plot summary at imdb describes the movie as: "One of the few remaining drone repairmen assigned to Earth, its surface devastated after decades of war with the alien Scavs, discovers a crashed spacecraft with contents that bring into question everything he believed about the war, and may even put the fate of mankind in his hands."  It's based on Joseph Kosinski and Arvid Nelson' comic book, and Kosinki even directs and co-wrote the script.  Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Zoe Bell, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Olga Kurylenko, and Melissa Leo star.  Even though it has Tom Cruise, I'm still going to see it!

Stuck in Love
April 19
Greg Kinnear plays a writer who goes on a journey of discovering what love is, along with his ex-wife and children.  Co-stars include Jennifer Connelly, Kristen Bell, Logan Lehrman, and Lily Collins.  Kristen Bell, everybody.

Iron Man 3
May 3
Hopefully Iron Man 3 will be much better than Iron Man 2.  Already controversial for its casting of Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin, Iron Man 3, should continue to follow our very flawed hero as he fights The Mandarin.  Don Cheadle, Jon Favreau, and Gwenyth Paltrow reprise their roles.  It looks like Iron Man will don new armor as Iron Patriot, testing public image and acceptance of a vigilante superhero.  Will wearing American colors be enough?

Epic
May 24
Prepare for an epic female-led animated movie where the main character, voiced by Amanda Seyfried, is thrust into a fantastical world of war.  Jason Sudeikis, Steven Tyler, Beyonce, Josh Hutcherson, Colin Farrell, Aziz Ansari, Christoph Waltz, and Chris O'Dowd co-star.

As Cool As I Am
June 7
Sarah Bolger stars as Lucy Diamond, a girl who is practically raising herself and getting tips on what kind of a person not to be, as modeled by her parents, played by Claire Danes and James Marsden.  I'm excited for this, not only because of the great cast, but also because it actually has great and starring roles for women!  It's really about a mother-daughter relationship, and how broken the mother is, while the daughter is finding herself and being the actual mother in the relationship.  Peter Fonda, Jeremy Sisto, Thomas Mann, and Alanis Morissette co-star.

Man of Steel
June 14
This Superman movie might actually be good!  And it's the first DC film I've been excited about!  Henry Cavill stars as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Russell Crowe as Jor-El, Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as the Kents, and many more.

World War Z
June 21
Based off Max Brooks' book, comprised of eyewitness accounts of the zombie apocalypse around the world, World War Z will not do the same, as you'd think.  It follows Brad Pitt, who also serves as producer, as a UN employee who travels the globe to stop the zombie outbreak.

Kick-Ass 2
June 28
I loved Kick-Ass, and I fully expect this to be even better, considering it should have considerably more Hit Girl.  She's the best.  The absolutely best.  I love Chloe Moretz!

Lawless (tentative title)
July 4 (Russia)
Terrence Malick has struck gold with this movie about intersecting love triangles with a cast including Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Ryan Gosling, Holly Hunter, Christian Bale, Rooney Mara, and Michael Fassbender.  The film takes place in Austin, Texas with a backdrop of Austin' stellar music scene.

Girl Most Likely (formerly Imogene)
July 19
Kristen Wiig stars in this dark comedy as a playwright Imogene who stages a suicide attempt in order to win back her ex-boyfriend but ends up living with her gambling-addicted mother (Annette Benning) because of it.  Darren Criss, Matt Dillon, Natasha Lyonne, June Diane Raphael, Michelle Hurd, and Nathan Corddry co-star.

The Wolverine
July 26
The Wolverine takes our anti-hero, played by Hugh Jackman, to Japan to train in the ways of the samurai.  Yukio, Silver Samurai, and Marika will also be integral parts of the story.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters
August 7
The entertaining Percy Jackson returns with an all-new adventure (for those who haven't read the books, it's all-new), seeking Jason's golden fleece to stop an ancient evil from taking over.  With Missi Pyle, Yvette Nicole Brown, Nathan Fillion, and Mary Birdsong joining the ranks, it will surely be hilarious as well.

Red 2
August 7
The sequel to Red has the former cast return with new cast members as well.  Helen Mirren being beautifully badass should be cause enough to see this.  (I lover her.  In a non-platonic way.)

Insidious Chapter 2
September 20
Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Barbara Hershey, and Lin Shaye return for the sequel to the disturbingly creepy supernatural thriller as they further delve into their experiences with the demonic realm.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For
October 4
The long-awaited sequel to Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller's Sin City arrives with Eva Green, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Josh Brolin, Jamie Chung, Jeremy Piven, Ray Liotta and Dennis Haysbert in addition to all the actors with characters still alive.

Thor: The Dark World
November 8
The sequel to Thor promises more action, as Thor leads his friends into battle against Malekith and the Dark Elves.

November 27
Based on the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale, the animated feature stars Olaf and Anna, respectively voiced by Josh Gad and Kristen Bell.  Olaf and Anna set off on a journey through the snowy mountains to kill the evil Snow Queen, voiced by Idina Menzel, and end the eternal winter she set upon the kingdom.

December 13
Ooooohhhh yeeeeeah, this one will be even better than the last!  With the story already set up and more Lee Pace as Thranduil, there's no way this can't be super stellarly amazing!  And more Cate Blanchett as Galadriel!  Evangeline Lily will also join the cast as elf Tauriel, the head of the Mirkwood guard, written into the movie that was not in the book.  Stephen Fry will also join as Master of Laketown, and we'll see the shapeshifter Beorn (Mikael Persbrandt) and Bard the Bowman (Luke Evans).

December 18
Co-written and directed by George Clooney, this will certainly be a characters study and most certainly an Oscar nom about a crew working to recover paintings stolen by the Nazis before they're destroyed by Hitler's orders.  Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Daniel Craig, George Clooney, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Hugh Bonneville, Jean Dujardin, and Bob Balaban star.
