SHIELD TV Series from Joss Whedon

I've been so busy that I haven't posted about this gloriously wonderful news.  Joss Whedon was confirmed to be working on a new TV series that focuses on SHIELD, the organization that forms the Avengers.  In addition, the series will be in continuity with the films and may even have guest appearances by the film characters.  Whedon will likely co-write the pilot with his brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen and possibly direct the pilot.  What's up in the air, though, is the characters Whedon will be using.

Will Whedon create his own characters or use established characters or both?  When asked if the characters (played by Lizzy Caplan and Jesse Bradford) from the short Avengers tie-in Item 47 would be in the show, Whedon responded:
I honestly don’t think they’re available because I think she’s on another show. We’re building it with a new group of people. They were great and that had a lot to do with why we’re making the show, but we’re starting fresh.
Side notes: Read that interview over at Crave.  Whedon nerds out on Shakespeare, and it's a blast.  So what I'm also getting from this is that Lizzy Caplan is on a new TV series?  I don't have confirmation on this yet, and imdb says nothing of it, other than the Party Down movie, of course, which is kind of a TV series, right?

So what characters will be on it that are already established?  Possibly:
Jessica Drew, Spider-Woman
Carol Danvers, Ms Marvel/Captain Marvel
Kitty Pryde (Are mutants allowed,, or is TV safe for Marvel mutants?)
Daisy Johnson, Quake
Abigail Brand (whom he invented for Astonishing X-Men)
Sam Wilson, Falcon
Dum Dum Dugan
Barbara "Bobbi" Morse, Mockingbird
A few of these would be great set-ups for the Marvel movie verse, too, like Spider-Woman, Captain Marvel, or Mockingbird.  After all, Captain Marvel would've likely been in Jessica Jones' Alias series, and Mockingbird almost had her own series as well.  Who would you want to see play your favorite SHIELD members?  I'd like to see Tabrett Bethell and Bridget Regan team-up again (possibly as Captain Marvel or Mockingbird and Spider-Woman or Abby Brand, respectively).  Could Cobie Smulders be the lead if this is the last season of HIMYM?

The Avengers arrives on shelves on September 25, 2012.

  1. Holla! This is exciting. Odds that it won't get cancelled quickly? Middling.
